Multiculturalism

Jesus loves the little children,
All the children of the world.
Red, brown, yellow, black and white,
They are precious in His sight.
Jesus loves the little children of the world…

“Do we not all have one father?
Has not one God created us?
Why do we deal treacherously
each against his brother so as
to profane the covenant of our fathers?” (Malachi 2: 10)

There is neither Jew nor Greek,
there is neither slave nor free,
there is no male and female,
for you are all one in Christ Jesus. (Galatians 3: 28)

We are all one in Christ Jesus…

Thursday’s Thoughts from Pastor David

In the summer of 1986 I served as a Chaplain on the cardiology floor (11th floor) of the Baptist Hospital, now called Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

One of my responsibilities was to go room to room and check in on patients, see how they were doing, pray with them and their families and offer any other kind of spiritual counsel and support.

I entered one room and saw the patient sitting upright in his bed as he was flanked by two gentlemen, who happened to be family members.

I introduced myself as being one of the “Ministers” in the hospital and we engaged in some friendly conversation for about five minutes. After a slight pause in our dialogue, the patient looked at me quizzically and said, “You’re awfully young to be one of the “Administrators” of the hospital.” (I was 23 years old at the time!)

The Queen B

IMG_1179

The Queen B sits on her throne, a rocking chair from Cracker Barrel.

Her reign covers towns with names like Gloucester, Mathews, West Point, Ware Neck, Gwynn Island, Urbanna, and Saluda.

Her reign reaches out to bodies of waters with names like Chesapeake, Rappahannock, Mobjack, and York.

From the Commonwealth of Virginia down to the Sunshine State called Florida, so has the train of her regal robe traveled.

The Queen B is married to King Doug, better known in the royal family as Senior.
The King’s thick Virginia accent is soothing to the ears as the phrase, “We are going about the house” would be pronounced, “We are going aboat the hoase.”

The royal family consists of two Princes and two Princesses, an equal balance of beauty, brawn, brains, love, and loyalty.

Prince Doug, commonly called Junior.
Princess Laura.
Prince David
Princess Ellen, the Baby Sis.

Three of the Royal Children share the Queen B and King Doug’s full DNA genealogy, with Prince David only sharing the Queen B’s genes as a traveling Court Jester made his way through the kingdom during the difficult Civil War of 1962-1963. With Prince David’s striking resemblance, the family has teased the Queen B that perhaps the traveling Court Jester was actually the King of Rock N Roll in disguise…

The Voice of God

Voice of God

We met in 1983 and slowly, but surely we became good friends over the years.
And then I got divorced and as is usually the case, sides have to be taken and friendships, relationships come to an abrupt end.

Our friendship of fifteen years was one of the casualties… There were certainly no hard feelings on my part. There probably were no hard feelings on his side either. This is just the way things go. I wish it was otherwise…

About four of five years ago, after a fifteen year moratorium of silence, I reached out via email to let my friend know I still cared about him and his beautiful family. I cannot tell you how much my heart skipped when he responded and wanted to catch up by phone.

Best Friend, Worst Enemy…

Bald Eagle in mid-air flight over Homer Spit Kenai Peninsula Alaska Winter

I ran into a friend of mine yesterday I hadn’t seen in a long time.
We have a very unusual relationship.
He’s been my best friend.
He’s also been my worst enemy…

SeeingGodatWorkEveryDay…

We stood face to face and acknowledged one another.
Yesterday our relationship was somewhere between friend and tolerable acquaintance.
He looks much younger than I remember even though the gray around his temples would suggest otherwise.
His compassionate eyes still have that sparkle but they also looked tired and lost, longing for something of which I wasn’t quite sure…
I inquired, “How ya doing?”
His response of, “You know…” left me wanting to scream, “No! I don’t know!”

Armor of God

The first Thursday after the Fourth!
Hope you had an exhilarating time celebrating our country’s two hundred and forty-first birthday!!
USA USA USA!

Here’s our question of the day?
How spiritually fit are you to face the daily obstacles, people, issues, dysfunctions and challenges which greet you?

I love Paul’s description of the Armor of God in his letter to the church in Ephesus.

Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication.”
(Ephesians 6: 13-18)

How is your spiritual armor holding up these days?

  1. Belt of Truth
  2. Breastplate of Righteousness
  3. Shoes of Peace
  4. Shield of Faith
  5. Helmet of Salvation
  6. Sword of the Spirit = Word of God

May this upcoming weekend be an opportunity to prepare these six crucial pieces of armament to be at the ready for those things you will be facing in the days ahead.

Speaking of “facing”… Did you notice in the Armor of God there is nothing to protect your back?
That could mean a couple of things:

  1. God always has your back… Or
  2. Never turn and run away from the problems facing you! You have more than enough armor to face and defeat that which you are facing! Full steam ahead! Fear not! Go get ‘em!

Don’t forget Paul’s sage advice – Put on the WHOLE armor of God. Not a couple of select piece! Not just one piece! Put on the WHOLE armor of God!

See you Sunday…
All suited up!

Grace and peace,
Laugh often and Fear not!
David!

Lady Liberty

iWitness_July_Cover_for_KindleJuly 4th – An excerpt from my devotional book – “iWitness July”

Lady Liberty

Back in the late 70’s… (the fact that we can remember back that far makes this story suspect from the start. Yet, I promise it is true to life as was told to me by my good friend Brian.)
My friend Brian made some type of All-American marching band. Their trip was a European tour which included a few stops behind the “Iron Curtain.”

Please remember that this was during the height of the Cold War between the Americans and the Russians.

While the band was marching their way through Czechoslovakia, Brian met a girl… a Christian girl. The girl told Brian how when she and her Christian friends wanted to meet for Bible study they had to be very secretive about it and would meet late at night under the cover of darkness and candlelight. At best, she confided, they could meet maybe once a week at different homes so as to keep their meetings at the highest level of secrecy.

After listening to her testimony, Brian in a rather nonchalant manner went on to tell her in the United States you could have Bible studies whenever and wherever you wanted with full publicity and without any level of secrecy.

The girl’s response haunts me to this day, “Wow… I bet you have Bible studies every day!!”

Thursday’s Thoughts from Pastor David

Good morning June 1st!!

Summertime, and the livin’ is easy
Fish are jumpin’ and the cotton is high
Oh, your daddy’s rich and your ma is good-lookin’
So hush little baby, Don’t you cry…

No crying here on this First Thursday in June!
Although, the only cotton I see is on the shirt I am wearing…

This Sunday we celebrate the Day of Pentecost!
Let’s get the timeline down…

TEAM

Once again Thursday has arrived and you know what that means!!!
Thursday’s Thoughts from Pastor David!!

Did you happen to see the NBA basketball game on Mother’s Day between the Golden State Warriors and the San Antonio Spurs?
Neither did I…
But…

Here’s what happened!
The San Antonio Spurs were pummeling the Warriors by 25 points at one point in the game.
Making the greatest and largest comeback in a Western Conference Finals in what seems like forever, the Warriors eventually won the game 113 – 111.

Stephan Curry of the Warriors had 40 points!
Kevin Durant of the Warriors had 34 points!
I think it goes without saying, these two guys pulled off the victory for the Warriors.
Or did they?
