The Christmas Story… Once again

Shepherds 2

Twas the Thursday before Christmas, and all through the house
Chaos reigned, presents weren’t bought and I felt like a louse!
The commercial focus of the season reeked of “Get us something to please us!”
Instead of honing in on the newborn baby named Jesus.

So let’s take a moment, a little time to hear the tale
About the heavenly Lord God Almighty being born as a little male
The Shepherds were all out in the fields where they lay
When along came a host of Angels telling them, “Here, you can no longer stay!”
Go into Bethlehem, the quiet, quaint little town
To discover a baby boy whose glow would turn any frown upside down.

Goodbye to the sheep and away they went with great haste
On the cutting edge of the greatest event in human history they wanted to taste.
Arrive they did at the little impromptu manger
Father, Mother and child… no fear, no danger

The Shepherds described the Angels in the sky, in the heavenly crease
Of how they proclaimed, “Glory to God, on earth let there be peace!”
On Mary and Joseph and little Jesus they did shower
The witness of the heavenly host’s power

Soon it was time to return to their field
Where they protected their sheep, serving as their shield
But in their heart of hearts nothing would be the same
Sharing the story, the birth, the love of the Savior they could not tame

And to this day, we continue to hear the Shepherd’s story
Of God becoming a baby, giving up the heavenly glitz and glory
So our hearts, our lives and our future could be seized
By the One with whom God is very well pleased…

#10 “Shoulders” – 25 Days of Christmas

broad-shoulders

For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given…
(Isaiah 9: 6)

Did you look at the sonogram of your baby in utero?
Boy or Girl?
Did you want to know ahead of time?

What did you picture?
His eyes?
Her nose?

His smile?
Her laugh?
Healthy, hearty ten fingers, ten toes?

How about the shoulders?
Do you think of the baby’s shoulders?
How wide will they be?
Did you even envision the shoulders?

Neither did I…
But God did…

This Jesus to be born?
“…and the government shall be upon his shoulder…” (Isaiah 9: 6)

#8 “Commanded” – 25 Days of Christmas

keep-calm-and-do-as-you-re-told-6

“When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him…”

I remember as a child scowling as these words from parents would invade my hearing:
“Do as you’re told.”

Who wants to do as they’re told?

When I am “told” to do something, I would never disagree or argue “out loud,” but in my mind I am figuring out a way to tweak the command ever so slightly.

The Angel commanded
Joseph married pregnant Mary
Remained chaste
Named the boy Jesus!
Just as he had been told…
No scowl.

I want to be like Joseph.

#7 “Immanuel” – 25 Days of Christmas

immanuel03

“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall call his name Immanuel”
(which means, God with us) – Matthew 1: 22-23

An incredibly terrible grammatical trend which took place years ago, driving every English teacher worth their salt crazy was the trending phenomena of one friend saying to another,

“Do you want to go with…?”

The direct object of “me” is missing from the invitation.

The birth of Jesus ushers in the completion of the invitation that humanity had been missing.

Jesus is “Immanuel” – God with us!

Every day
Everywhere
Every moment
God is with “Me”…

Immanuel

#6 “The Reason for the Season” – 25 Days of Christmas

175538
If you hear it once, you will hear it a thousand times this Christmas season: “Jesus is the Reason for the Season!”

Bumper stickers…
Uplifting jingles on Christian Radio…
Preachers from the Pulpit…
Posters in windows…

The Reason for the Season is Crystal Clear – It’s all about Jesus!!!!!

Would you mind if I burst your bubble?

Listen again what the Angel says to Joseph, “She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”
(Matthew 1: 21)

Jesus came to save YOU!

YOU are the Reason for the Season!

#5 “Angel” – 25 Days of Christmas

titian_-_polyptych_of_the_resurrection_-_archangel_gabriel_-_wga22785

The Nativity narrative shows an “Angel” interacting with just about every major character.

An Angel appears to:
Joseph
Mary
The Shepherds

Angels are “messengers of God.”

Typically, when an Angel encounters a human being their first words are, “Fear not!”
Why are we so afraid of the “Angels – messengers of God?”

I am wondering if you would be an “Angel” today…

What “message” from God would you be willing to communicate to someone today?

Here’s a few to get you started…

You are…
Accepted…
Loved…
Forgiven…
An amazing encourager…
A faithful friend…
In my prayers…

Fear not…be an “Angel” today!

#4 “The Third” – 25 Days of Christmas

dream-of-st-joseph1

Betrothed to be married, Joseph and Mary
A romance like tale fairy

Yet, before they slept as one in a bed
Mary comes back from a trip pregnant she said.

Joseph whose temper is said to be mild
Has two choices for his betrothed Mary with child

Death by stoning
Or divorce by disowning

An angel of the Lord came to say
“Do not fear, there might be another way

Take her home to marry
For the Savior, the Anointed One is in her womb to carry”

How grateful we are the absurd was heard
Saving the world, Joseph took alternative the third!
