This strange yet sterling star leads the Wise Men every step of the way.

They are traveling from the East.
Bethlehem would appear first.

And yet, the star bypasses Bethlehem and leads them to Jerusalem to meet the jealous and insecure King Herod first.

I only have one question…

Why would the Star lead the Wise Men to the bad guy first?
Why would such leading lead to such destruction?
Why would the “roundabout way” be “the way” to the newborn king?

Forgive me.
I guess I really had four questions…

I only have one answer…
I don’t know.

Laugh often and Fear not!
Merry Christmas!

The Baby Changed Everything

Pregnant Woman

Overheard at the gym this morning while shaving…

A couple of guys saw a buddy they hadn’t seen in awhile…

Brad: Hey buddy! Haven’t seen you in awhile. Where have you been?

Missing Buddy: I moved back to Fresno, but still have most of my work here in Vegas.

Brad: Really. Wow. What caused the move?

Missing Buddy: Well… my girlfriend got pregnant. She didn’t have any friends or family here, so I did the right thing and moved her closer to family. Had to sell my bachelor pad and now I have a little condo I stay at when I am in town.

Brad: Dude…

Missing Buddy: Yeah… the baby changed everything!

He’s On His Way

Hes on his way 3 Advent 2017Can you believe we are in the last thirty-one days of 2017?

Jesus is coming soon! He will be here before we know it!

Preparing for the coming of the Messiah, the Newborn King is one of the great traditions of the Presbyterian Church. It is not much different than preparing for a newborn baby coming into our family and into our home.

Prepare him room…

How fun it is to decorate the nursery and supply the room with the crib, the rocker, the changing table, and of course the stuffed animals.

What kind of room will I prepare for the Newborn King? The next twenty-five days will be chock full of activities – office parties, family gatherings, church services and functions. Where will we carve out the time to make room for Jesus? If we are not intentional about it, those great intentions will be lost in the wave of other activities.

Choose a Name…

When we found out Julie and I were having a baby girl, we had the best time trying to figure out what name would we grace this little girl with. We finally arrived with the name Faith!

The name of the Newborn King is Jesus, but He is also called – Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. What name will He be for you? Do you need an extra dose of “Peace” this Advent Season? Do you need something “Mighty” to happen? Choose a name!

When I was born I weighed in at 9 pounds and 10 ounces. I arrived as a toddler! These days, families send out baby announcements to extended family and friends with all the details of the latest arrival.

What would your announcement say to others about your Newborn King Jesus? Would you marvel at the size of His arms of love? Would you rave about the sound of his gracious voice? Would His eyes of tranquility mesmerize you?

The most important thing a newborn needs is touch! How fun it is to snuggle and smell the newness of life with a newborn baby. To feel the warmth of this bundle of joy against our chest is one of the best feelings in the world.

How about we do the same with Jesus this Christmas… Hold Him close… Squeeze Him up against your body and smell the richness of his unconditional love, grace and mercy. Is there any sweeter experience…?
I think not.

Laugh Often And Fear Not!

Reason for the Season?

Reason for the season

Reason for the Season?

Someone will post it on Facebook…

It will grace the bumper of the car in front of you…

It will float out there like a righteous hot air balloon amid some serious Christmas conversation…

With the casualness of saying “How’s it going?”, it will be reeled off the tongue of a sincere friend…

You may even be accosted with it by some non-commercialized zealots intent on keeping Christmas “pure”…

With big letters, some store owners will paint it on their storefronts…

Maybe I’m the first one to bring it to your attention this Christmas season…

You are going to come face to face with it sooner or later, so here we go…

“Jesus is the Reason for the Season!”

I said it…
You just read it…
Glad that’s over with…

My iWitness…

I get it.
I understand.
I even put it on the top of this blog post!
I know what “they” are driving at when they proclaim it and declare it.
I see the desire to “rail against the commercialized Christmas machine.”

The focus of the Christmas season needs to center on the newborn savior.

Jesus is not the reason for the season.

Yes, you read that right.

Let me repeat myself…

Jesus is not the reason for the season.

If Jesus is not the reason for the season, then who or what is the reason for the season?

Do you want to know the answer?
Of course you do!

YOU are the reason for the season!!

Listen carefully as you read the most quoted verse in all of scripture…

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” (John 3. 16-17)

God loved who? The world!
Who is the world? YOU
God gave His son. So that whoever believes…
Who is whoever? YOU
God sent His son not to condemn, but to save.
Save who? YOU
God sent His son into the world so that whoever believes in him will have eternal life.
Who gets eternal life? YOU

Get it?
Got it?

YOU are the reason for the season! And don’t let anyone tell you different…

And that’s my iWitness…
Laugh often and Fear not!

“Nunc Dimittis” – A 100 Word Poem on Simeon

READ THIS FIRST (Otherwise the 100 word sermon might not make much sense if you do not know the role of Simeon in the birth narrative):

22 And when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”) 24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.” 25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. 27 And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law, 28 he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said,

#23 “Unwrapped” – 25 Days of Christmas

“And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” (Luke 2: 12)

Recently I ran into a family practicing the strangest Christmas tradition I have ever heard.

Christmas presents surround their Christmas tree.

Christmas day arrives.

The gifts are passed around to each family member.

Here’s the kicker…

They never unwrap the gifts…

Jesus came “wrapped” in swaddling cloths.

The choice is yours –

Leave Jesus wrapped or unwrap the Messiah, the glory of God and let the wild and joyous journey begin of living a life “unwrapped!”

#22 “Strange Sign” – 25 Days of Christmas

“And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” (Luke 2: 12)

We have all heard about how God will show us a “sign” by the opening of a “door.”

Not always…

A dear friend was going through a rough time about twenty years ago.
At his wits end, he finally drove himself to the “Funny Farm.” (His words…)

Guess what?
The gate to the “Funny Farm” was closed.
Strange Sign…

Next day at church?
Jesus changed his life!

Swaddling cloths?
Strange Sign…

World changed!!
